introduction burnet cottage is a semi detached cottage on an organic upland farm called godscroft, 6 miles from the east coast in the scottish borders. the single track road up to the cottage ends 150 yards further on up at the farm. the area is sparsely populated and has seen fewer changes than most in recent decades. all the roads within a radius of approx 4 miles are single track. the cottage faces south over the monynut valley and more often than not visitors comment on the view. adjacent to the side lawn (with picnic table), is a tall, pine wood with a rope swing for children and a round path through it. when the weather is fine, this is a pleasant place to sit and read or perhaps to try stringing up a hammock and relaxing. in front there is another little lawn and a herb/flower border. the monynut valley, home to rabbits, buzzards and herons, has a picturesque stream and ancient, rare, oak woodland with sssi designation (site of special scientific interest). it is a peaceful place to walk, picnic or to sit in the woodland listening to the extensive birdlife and having no television (and a switch to turn the wifi off), a great place to ‘get away from it all’. the rivermonynut has a clean, pebbly bed and children enjoy playing there at warmer times of the year. the southern upland way passes nearby, through abbey saint bathans. there are many places of historical interest in the area including old castles, the remains of an ancient broch and an interesting coastline with a nature reserve and excellent beaches. burnet cottage is privately let, not agency. activities obvious activities include: walking (guide leaflets for recommended walks are provided), strolls around the farm, sea and river fishing (when in season) (we are less than 1 mile from the river whiteadder), visiting the nearby beaches and fishing villages, collecting and chopping wood for the stove, building dams down at the river, identifying the wild flowers and birds and just enjoying the peace and quiet. children are welcome. they can usually find something interesting without going too far afield. for more persistent walkers, the hills of the lammermuirs provide thousands of acres of rugged solitude. the three peaks of the eildon hills near galashiels are a 35 mile drive away and well worth a visit, as are plenty of coastal, hill or forest walks which are much closer. a suggested walks leaflet is provided. start at the cottage or alternatively, transport to a distant starting point can usually be arranged. thanks to the distance from large conurbations, there is a relative absence of light-pollution, so on a cloudless night, this is a good place for what is now being termed "skygazing or darksky tourism". nearby towns and villages are abbey st bathans, duns, eyemouth, grantshouse, reston, chirnside, auchencrow, oldhamstocks, cockburnspath, preston, cranshaws, longformacus and dunbar. the cheviot hills near wooler are 30 miles distant and the festival city of edinburgh, an easy 40 mile drive away. see also the activities page of this web site the cottage visitor satisfaction is high (some comments here) and the cottage is considered to be "well equipped", "very peaceful", "very clean" and having a "superb view". it was periodically advertised with dalton's weekly and the lady from 1993 up until 2001, but now attracts visitors solely by word of mouth and this web site. basic, but cosy and cheery, the cottage is comfortably furnished, well equipped and normally sleeps one to five. bed linen is not always ironed but is washed in non-bio liquid, with extra water plus extra rinses and when possible dried outside. the largest room is the living room with a solid fuel stove, three piece suite, coffee table, table and chairs etc. the remainder of the rooms are smaller but functional. upstairs, one double bedroom leads directly into the next (single), and downstairs the bathroom (with bath, toilet and basin but no shower) opens directly out of the kitchen. the downstairs bedroom (bunk beds) opens directly into the living room. child/family friendly although no special child equipment is currently provided, the area is unusually peaceful and not touristy. the single track road in front of the cottage ends 150 meters further up the road and has very little traffic. whilst welcoming and comfortable the cottage is not luxurious or posh by today’s standards and is good for families with children. the main double bedroom upstairs opens directly (though a doorway) into the upstairs single bedroom which gives a good balance of privacy with the possibility of leaving the door open to monitor a young child. shops and transport there is no public transport. the nearest supermarket is nine miles away at duns and berwick-upon-tweed (with a morrisons and aldi), is twenty two miles distant. if requested food can be bought in for your arrival and online shopping shopping with deliveries to the door are possible. the cottage is an hours drive from edinburgh airport. the nearest railway stations are dunbar and berwick-upon-tweed. equipment this includes wifi (see below), telephone (£5 of calls and free voip calls included - almost always much more than enough), washing machine, large and efficient clothes-drying pulley, fridge, electric cooker, microwave, freezer, kettle, toaster, sandwich toaster, crockery, cutlery, wine and beer glasses, stainless steel pans, food containers, baking equipment etc, iron, hoover, hair dryer, cd/radio/cassette player, books (including a new testament in each bedroom), board games, local leaflets and maps. no tv please note: the cottage is television free. could you go for a week without tv? some find living without tv to be a liberating experience but it is not for everyone. wifi a wireless broadband internet connection is available for use with your wireless laptop, phone, tablet, phablet etc, (but not for connecting to bbc iplayer). download speed usually exceeds 5 mbps. the wifi is easily turned off with a single switch should you wish to do so. mobile phones there is normally a good vodafone and o2 signal at burnet cottage both inside and out. ee is good outside but inside you need to be right at the window. heating there are three small radiators heated by the stove, and three night storage heaters. the water can be heated automatically by the off-peak electricity or by the stove. there is also a booster immersion. logs are provided for the stove. water this comes from a spring on the farm. no chlorine or fluorine are added and it tastes great. there is some info about private water supplies here: www.privatewatersupplies.gov.uk. arrival the cottage is cleaned to a high standard between visitors and when you arrive it will be tidy and pleasantly warm with the stove lit. if previously unoccupied, the heating will have been on for up to 8 days to ensure it really is cosy. the beds will be made up ready and someone will normally be there to welcome you. leaflets with suggested walks, notes about the cottage and maps are provided. pet/dog friendly civilised dogs and cats are welcome as long at they don't chase the animals, keep off the furniture and leave no traces. special requirements if you have any special requirements or requests please ask. smokers welcome smokers are not persecuted here but please
